The Sierra Club announced its support of Dana Ferguson's candidacy for US Congress in Michigan's First District.

OAKLAND, Calf. – "The Sierra Club’s National Political Team and its Michigan Chapter are pleased to support Dana Ferguson for US Congress in appreciation of his demonstrated commitment to protecting America’s environment," said Executive Director Michael Brune and Political Chair Victoria Brandon.

The Sierra Club is committed to promoting clean energy solutions to move the nation beyond dirty fossil fuels like coal, oil and dangerous nuclear power, and towards a safe, clean energy future built on energy efficiency, clean energy, and American innovation.

"We are proud to endorse Dana Ferguson. Michigan is already feeling the impacts of climate change and we need leaders like Dana who understands the urgency and bold action needed to combat this crisis," said Tim Minotas, Legislative and Political Coordinator, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter. "In Congress he will fight every day to protect our clean air, clean water, and our natural resources, and knows we can do this all while creating good-paying jobs through a Just Transition."

Dana Ferguson supports comprehensive Green infrastructure investment, the Carbon Fee and Dividend and the U.S. rejoining the Paris Accords. He believes state governments like Michigan should have the authority to hold corporate polluters accountable. Ferguson will fight for clean air and water by restoring EPA funding weakened by Trump and Dana's opponent. Ferguson is a proponent of efforts to be carbon neutral by 2030, opposes fracking waste in Northern Michigan and supports Indigenous Water Protectors and tribal-land sovereignty.

"The Great Lakes are an integral part of the First District," said Minotas. "They are important to the way of life, culture, and economy. The residents of this district deserve someone like Dana, who will lead and prioritize our water resources for today and for future generations."

"For 125 years the Sierra Club has been working to protect our environment," said Ferguson. "It's an honor to join them in the fight for our future. People of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula deeply care about the Great Lakes and the environment. My opponent has 10% lifetime score with conservationists. Out of 93 pieces of environmental legislation, he's voted pro-environment just eight times in four years. If Representatives know and understand what it means to live in this beautiful area, it's an appalling track record. In partnership with organizations like the Sierra Club, we will do better."

Since its founding in 1892, the Sierra Club has protected America’s wild places and wildlife. In addition, the Club works to protect public health and ensure safe and healthy communities that are free of toxic air and water pollution. The Sierra Club and its over 3.8 million members and supporters work to support candidates who share these values.

"Sierra Club endorsements are only given to candidates who live our values: putting people and the environment first, and fighting to limit the power of polluters and profit, so we can have a democracy that works for everyone," said Mintos. "That’s Dana Ferguson."
